Jesus, the Exile and the Gospel of Mark | Mark loves to begin a story, interrupt it with another story and
then finish the story he began with. Consider the following
examples where the verses put in brackets represent a second narrative
that has been "sandwiched" between an outer narrative frame. In
each case the external frame would read more smoothly if the second
narrative had not been interpolated within it. So for example,
read 6:7-14 and skip directly to v. 30 and then read 15-29.
3:19-35 [22-30]
5:21-43 [25-34]
6:7-30 [15-29]
11: 12-25 [15-19]
14: 53-72 [55-65].
Take a look at all of these to make sure you understand the
pattern. Then examine more closely 6:7-30 and
14:1-11. What interpretive role do you think is played by
the interpolated narrative? In other words why does Mark
tell the story in this strange way? For 6:7-30 compare the way in
which the narrative unit is treated in Luke (see Luke 9:1-11) and
Matthew ( see Matt 10:1-15).
