Conversation Analysis Worksheet

For each of the following interactions,

  • Write how you would respond. If you think there will be some type of emotion or tone in your voice, include that (excited, sad, quiet, softly, etc.), if there’s a pause indicate that with […], and insert any uhm, er, eh, etc. that you think you might include in your response.
  • Identify:
    • Type of adjacency pair?

    • Common or Uncommon?

    • Preferred or Dispreferred?

 

  1. You’re walking across campus and you make eye contact with one of your professors:

    YOUR PROFESSOR: “Hello scholar.”

  2. Your friend is supposed to pick you up to go out to a movie at 6:30pm and arrives a few minutes late.

    YOUR FRIEND: “I am so sorry that I’m late. My roommate stopped me as I was walking out the door.”
