Read Book VII of The Republic carefully. Then, in no more than two pages:
  1. Lay out Socrates’s argument for the idea that "believers" is the wrong way to describe those who are committed to the real.
  2. Indicate in the last paragraph of your paper why Socrates thinks that a good society would have a philosopher as king.

HINTS:
  • Be sure to distinguish belief from knowledge.
  • Be sure to distinguish the object of belief from that of knowledge.
  • Be sure to tie the discussion of knowledge and belief to the desirability of "philosopher kings"
