Paper Assignment 1

Read Book I of the Republic carefully.  In no more than two pages, lay out Socrates's first argument against Thrasymachus.

A. Some hints that may prove helpful before you write the paper:

  1. Read the assigned material several times, outlining it as you go.
  2. Make an outline of the paper.
  3. Write a first draft of the paper.

B. Some hints that may prove helpful as you write the paper:

  1. You may set the argument in context by referring to what has transpired earlier.
  2. Indicate clearly what thesis Socrates is arguing against.
  3. Indicate clearly why Socrates's refutation of that thesis is or would be significant.
  4. Indicate how Socrates's argument against that thesis goes.  It is important that you do not merely paraphrase what Socrates says.  Rather, present his argument in a way that shows you really understand its logical structure.  Show that you understand how some claims follow from those that have gone before.
  5. Indicate clearly what thesis if any Socrates is arguing for.

Your papers must be neatly typed, word-processed and proof-read. The proof-reading must be evident by the paper's adherence to the canons of spelling, grammar and punctuation.
