Paper Assignment 1
Read Book I of the Republic carefully. In no more than two pages, lay out Socrates's first argument against Thrasymachus.
A. Some hints that may prove helpful before you write the paper:
- Read the assigned material several times, outlining it as you go.
- Make an outline of the paper.
- Write a first draft of the paper.
B. Some hints that may prove helpful as you write the paper:
- You may set the argument in context by referring to what has transpired earlier.
- Indicate clearly what thesis Socrates is arguing against.
- Indicate clearly why Socrates's refutation of that thesis is or would be significant.
- Indicate how Socrates's argument against that thesis goes. It is important that you do not merely paraphrase what Socrates says. Rather, present his argument in a way that shows you really understand its logical structure. Show that you understand how some claims follow from those that have gone before.
- Indicate clearly what thesis if any Socrates is arguing for.
Your papers must be neatly typed, word-processed and proof-read. The proof-reading must be evident by the paper's adherence to the canons of spelling, grammar and punctuation.
