Chapter 18
Discussion Questions - What Can Be Done
- Do you find it credible that someone could lead a richer life as a result of earning less money? Create your answer in the contrast of a brief description of downshifting as a response to excessive affluence?
- Mention at least four forms of advertising to which you are subjected daily. Then give a candid estimation of how extensively each form influences your buying habits.
- Mention a dozen or more things you do daily using motors (electric or gasoline). For each, estimate the hardship that would result if the motor involved were not available.
- Mention a dozen or more food products you eat regularly that are produced more than 1,000 miles away. For each, express your candid judgment on whether locally grown products could serve your nutritional needs just as well.
- Give your own analysis of the reasons why personal computing systems have to be upgraded every two or three years. Then discuss whether these reasons would be enough to persuade you not to buy a computing system guaranteed to last 10 years without upgrade if one were available.
