Paper 3

PAPER 3: Due On Session 22

DIALOGUE: Write a dialogue between two speakers trying to understand what the movie Mind the Gap has to teach them about love. The speakers should be discussing details of the movie, and how they interpret or respond to these details. (Such details may focus on the plot, but they may also include, for example, musical or visual aspects of the movie that contribute to the speaker’s response to it.) Construct one speaker’s point of view by drawing on Symposium 201D-212C, and the other speaker by drawing on Humanae Vitae or Andre Dubus, “All the Time in the World.”

ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENT: At Symposium 205D-E, Diotima makes a particular criticism of Aristophanes' account of love. At 212C, Aristophanes was about to respond to this criticism when he was interrupted by the noisy entrance of the drunken Alcibiades. Do three things in this paper: (1) State as precisely as you can in your own words what Diotima's criticism is; (2) Illustrate with an example of your own what the difference is between the two models of love; (3) Give the best response you can on Aristophanes' behalf.
