Discussion Questions for lectures 24 & 25 of PHIL 20214

Discussion: William Shakespeare, Othello

  • What is Iago jealous of?  How does jealousy mock or consume Iago? Othello?
  • Emilia says that jealous souls “are not ever jealous for the cause, But jealous for they’re jealous” (III.4.159-160).  Is jealousy always irrational?  In Exotica, for example, does Eric have good reason to be jealous of Francis?
  • What is the root of the difference between Othello’s love for Desdemona and Desdemona’s love for Othello?
  • What similarities does Othello share with Aschenbach in Death in Venice
  • What is the significance of Emilia in the play?
