Session 14 Discussion
Discussion questions for lectures 12 & 13 of PHIL 20214
Discussion: Symposium, speeches of Eryximachus and Aristophanes
- Eryximachus, following Pausanias, stresses the double nature of love and contends that medicine can bring these into harmony. In what ways does medicine or science try to control love today?
- Why does Eryximachus and Aristophanes connect the obligations of love with our allegiance to the Gods (see 188c and 193b)?
- Both Eryximachus and Aristophanes continue to explore how love is connected to the relationship between the body and soul. How do their accounts differ with respect to this issue?
- Aristophanes could support either a “type” model of love or a “unique individual” model. Make a case for one model or the other by giving textual evidence from Aristophanes’ speech.
- In Death in Venice, is Tadzio a unique individual or a type for Aschenbach’s erotic longings?
