Discussion Questions for Lectures 1-4 of PHIL 20214

Discussion: Exotica; Plato, Symposium, Phaedrus & Pausanias

  • In Exotica, why does Francis touch Christina?  Why does Thomas touch Christina?
  • What does Francis need Christina for?  What does Christina need Francis for?
  • In his opening speech, Phaedrus suggests that the fear of shame and the love of glory incite us to honorable deeds; give your own example of how this is supposed to work.  Are Francis or Christina motivated by shame in Exotica?  If so, how?
  • Pausanias distinguishes between two kinds of loves, a Uranian love and a Pandemian love.  What does he praise about the former and what does he criticize about the latter?  Are there models of these two loves in Exotica?
  • At 184c, Pausanias insists that any degradation is worth going through for the sake of virtue and wisdom.  He gives the example of slavery; discuss other examples and whether you find their pursuit for the sake of virtue persuasive.
