Discussion Questions for lectures 34 & 35 of PHIL 20214

Discussion: Proof; Symposium, Alcibiades' speech

  • In Proof, why is Martin so unwilling to trust?
  • How does Martin change in the course of the movie?  Why does he change?
  • What makes Alcibiades feel shame?  Does Martin feel shame in the same way in Proof?  Does Aschenbach feel shame in the same way in Death in Venice?
  • Based on Alcibiades’ speech, what is Socrates’ attitude towards Alcibiades?  Love, indifference, or something else?
  • Why is it significant that Alcibiades compares Socrates to the satyr Marsyas (right)?
