Discussion Questions for lectures 27 & 28 of PHIL 20214

Discussion: Hannah and Her Sisters; Dubus, "The Timing of Sin"

  • In what ways does Hannah exemplify independence?  In what ways does Leigh exemplify neediness?
  • Should we hold Elliot or Leigh more culpable?
  • Make a case for or against the claim that Elliot or LuAnn should tell their spouses about their infidelity.  Be sure to identify any relevant differences between their situations.
  • Othello says “He that is robbed, not wanting what is stol’n, Let him not know’t, and he’s not robbed at all” (III.3.242-3).  Would you want to know if your spouse were cheating on you?  Why or why not?
  • Is there a difference between adultery and what LuAnn did? Between infidelity and temptation to infidelity?
