Discussion Questions for lectures 15 & 16 of PHIL 20214

Discussion: The Hairdresser's Husband; Matthew 19 and Genesis 1-3

  • Are lovers who spend time only with each other more in love than lovers who have friends or children?
  • What caused Mathilde to feel threatened by time?
  • Is procreation a way to recover our immortality (Genesis narrative) or to attain immortality (Aristophanes’ myth)?  If Mathilde and Antoine had children, would their love had lasted longer?  Does eros by itself end in death, as it did for Aschenbach?
  • What is the significance of Eve being taken from Adam’s rib?
  • In Matthew, why does Jesus compare divorce to adultery?
