Image Editing Outline
Mini-Lecture 1 for session 6
Sources of images to edit
- Web
- Flickr photo sharing
- Various repositories
- Digital Camera - your original images
- Scanner
- Acquire/import/scan - via software or connection to editing software
- Resolution - 72 or 75 dpi for screen display
- Selection/cropping - scan more than you need (look for image size in pixels)
- JPG format
- Color or grayscale (true color = 16 million)
Editing techniques - try these in PhotoShop, Fireworks, GIMP, etc.
- Modify
- Crop
- Canvas - rotate, resize
- Scale - image size and resolution
- Select (and de-select)
- Feathering
- History panel
- Color adjustment - levels, brightness/contrast, saturation
- Sharpen or blur
- Transform - distort, rotate
- Erase or pain over - scratches, background junk
- Filter
- Layers - collage, cutout
- Opacity/transparency
- Add
- Text - effects (e.g. drop shadow)
- Shape
- Frame
- Another image - collage, etc
- Export
- Compressed - GIF or JPG
