Image Editing Outline

Mini-Lecture 1 for session 6

Sources of images to edit

  • Web
    • Flickr photo sharing
    • Various repositories
  • Digital Camera - your original images
  • Scanner
    • Acquire/import/scan - via software or connection to editing software
    • Resolution - 72 or 75 dpi for screen display
    • Selection/cropping -  scan more than you need (look for image size in pixels)
    • JPG format
    • Color or grayscale (true color =  16 million)

Editing techniques - try these in PhotoShop, Fireworks, GIMP, etc.

  • Modify
    • Crop
    • Canvas - rotate, resize
    • Scale - image size and resolution
    • Select (and de-select)
      • Feathering
      • History panel
    • Color adjustment - levels, brightness/contrast, saturation
    • Sharpen or blur
    • Transform - distort, rotate
    • Erase or pain over - scratches, background junk
    • Filter
    • Layers - collage, cutout
    • Opacity/transparency
  • Add
    • Text - effects (e.g. drop shadow)
    • Shape
    • Frame
    • Another image - collage, etc
  • Export
    • Compressed - GIF or JPG
