Second Short Essay Requirements

Write a short essay on one of the following topics:

1.  Explain how time and space are very deftly utilized by Fatima Mernissi to underscore the tension between gender and identity in Dreams of Trespass.  How do men view time and space; how do women view them?  How are women able to subvert the conventional notions of time and space and transgress against societal expectations of feminine conformity?

OR

2.  Like Dreams of Trespass, Abouzeid's novel, Year of the Elephant, also revolves around women who challenge conventional frontiers and roles assigned to them by society.  How does Zahra's life become an extended metaphor for independence and betrayal?  How do shifting frontiers in the novel signal her growing awareness of self and independent identity?

Your response should be no longer than two pages, typed, and double-spaced.
