Midterm Review

  1. You will need to know the following taxonomic terms:
    1. Superfamilies, families, and subfamilies, of the catarrhines and platyrrhines.
    2. At least one species in each of the following genera: 
      • Hylobates
      • Bunopithecus
      • Symphalangus
      • Nomascus
      • Pan
      • Pongo
      • Saguinus
      • Macaca
      • Lemur
      • Indri.
  2. You should know the different types of demographic labels (grouping patterns) used for primates.
  3. You will need to be able to define and/or use the following terms/concepts:
    • Polygamy, Polyandry, Monogamy, Polygyny.
    • Fitness, Strategy, Ecology, Adaptation, Function.
    • Fitness value, Fitness cost.
    • Optimality theory, Altruism, Kin Selection, Evolutionary Stable Strategy, “Selfish gene” paradigm.
  4. Think about:
    • Types of competition, food distribution, dispersal, predation, parasites and disease
    • Habitat selection and utilization, Food acquisition and processing (including the distinctions between food types), Foraging Strategies (including anatomical adaptations), Thermoregulation, Reproduction
