Write a 1,000-word article for The Observer (the Notre Dame student newspaper) describing the field of Africana Studies and the place that the critical examination of the African American religious experience occupies therein. Your article should:
- Describe the discipline’s primary aims;
- Offer a rationale for treating religious faith as a topic of central importance within it;
- Detail some of the sources and methods used in the study of Africana spiritualities in the United States and elsewhere;
- Profile one event in African American religious history that you
consider central to an understanding of its overall nature and scope;
and
- Provide an apologia for the inclusion of Africana spirituality among those subjects included in an undergraduate Catholic liberal arts curriculum.
