About the Computer Applications Program

CAPP was established as a supplementary major in the College of Arts & Letters as a way to provide liberal arts students with formalized training in computing. An important mission of CAPP is to provide majors with proficiency in various facets of computing and information technology as a supplement to their primary majors and as a springboard for further professional education or a career in a technology-related field. TBS is a complementary skills program , which is very similar to a minor. Both programs serve as a window to the worlds of technology and business.

Classes at Notre Dame focus on reading, analyzing, and discussing fascinating literature. Students read canonical and lesser-known literary works, study issues of literacy and rhetoric, investigate the symbolic systems that shape cultural meaning, and craft original poetry and prose.
About the English Department

English classes at Notre Dame focus on reading, analyzing, and discussing fascinating literature. Students read canonical and lesser-known literary works, study issues of literacy and rhetoric, investigate the symbolic systems that shape cultural meaning, and craft original poetry and prose. All majors take "Introduction to Literary Studies" and three literary history courses that provide an overview of literary traditions from the Middle Ages to the present. In the capstone research seminar, students design and produce an original research project.

Electives include courses in the several periods of British, Irish, and American literature from their origins to the present, in certain aspects of classical and European literature, and in other literatures written in English. They also include courses in the genres of literature, in major authors, in literacy and rhetoric, in literary theory and the history of criticism, and in expository and creative writing. All courses taught in the department, not just those designated as writing courses, contain significant writing components.

  and programs
  fall
  into two major categories:
Break seminars and Summer Service Learning Projects.

Typically academic break
      seminars occur during student
breaks in the fall, winter and spring
for which students receive one-credit.
These seminars are facilitated by Center Faculty and staff, in
conjunction with
other academic departments, student leaders, and community partners.
Students examine social issues from multiple perspectives, read
relevant texts, study Catholic social

About the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures bears witness
through its scholarship and teaching to the importance of knowing
languages and knowing the world through languages. It therefore
promotes and supports language learning through its three programs--French and Fracophone Studies, Iberian and Latin-American Studies, and Italian Studies--as
an important aspect of "educated citizenship," taking advanced
competence as a key educational goal, which is to say, the ability to
conduct mature human relationships in the "other's" language, whether
these relationships are social, professional, or strategic (Mary Louise Pratt, “Building a New Public Idea about Language,” ADFL Bulletin, 34.3 (2003): 5-9).
The Department fosters relations between Notre Dame and the Romance
world(s) of Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia through its ties to
research institutes and universities throughout the world, and through
its support of Notre Dame's International Studies Programs in France,
Italy, Spain, and Latin America. Through its interactions with hosting
scholars and students from these parts of the world, the Department
faculty makes a vital contribution to Notre Dame's international
standing as a Catholic institution of higher learning.

About the Classics Department

Classics is an interdisciplinary subject comprising study of the ancient Greek and Latin languages, of Greek and Latin literature, and of the history, archaeology, art, religion and philosophy of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Notre Dame Classics Department offers courses in all these areas, and, uniquely in our approach to the ancient Mediterranean world, we include also instruction in Arabic and other Semitic languages, with related courses in Arabic and Islamic literature and history.

Classics is a subject of great breadth and diversity, and has natural connections to all other fields in the humanities, as well as to the sciences and the social sciences. It is one of the most traditional of academic subjects, but because classicists are pioneers in new ways of understanding the past, it is also one of the most intellectually innovative. Classics has been at the forefront of contemporary debates about gender, ethnicity, and the literary canon, and has led the way in the use of technology for teaching and research.

About the University Writing Program

As part of the University Writing Program, all first year students at Notre Dame are required to take a one semester Writing and Rhetoric course, which introduces them to principles of academic discourse and ethical argumentation. Students are taught how to frame a claim, conduct research, provide evidence, consider alternative views, and write in language appropriate to the intended audience. We teach these as necessary constituents of academic writing and as ethical practices—the foundations of responsible public discourse.

Additionally, the University Writing Program's Writing Center aims to create a culture of writing on the Notre Dame campus by working with student writers in intensive, one-on-one tutoring sessions.

About the Anthropology Department

Anthropology as a field of inquiry is both basic and comprehensive. It is basic in addressing itself to fundamental questions of human distinctiveness, survival and change. It is comprehensive in its embrace of the full diversity of peoples and cultures, as well as attending to the constraints and aspirations that distinguish them: the social, ecological, political, religious, artistic, economic and technical dimensions of the vast human project which appears wherever Homo Sapiens is found, both in the past and in the present.

A key concern of anthropology is to understand the human species -- its origins, evolution, differentiation, and the structures that reflect forms of social life defining in their various ways persons, families, societies and nations. Explorations into the nature of the human experience also sheds light on such questions as what is common to all humans, what aspects of behavior derive from biological or environmental bases, and what features are acquired through socialization and the acquisition of cultural knowledge.

About the History Department

The history department is a community of teachers/scholars united by a common commitment to enhance knowledge of, and understanding of, the human past, to communicate that knowledge to students and to equip those students with both an appreciation for, and facility for a critical appraisal of lives, institutions, and events past and present.

Valuing diversity, the department also recognizes, values, and seeks to cultivate unity. That recognition is evident in many dimensions of departmental life, but especially in our teaching in the areas of religious history, intellectual history and the history of science--the records of our attempts as humans to come to grips with the mundane and eternal significances of our lives. It is likewise evident in the focus of many members of the department on places and times in which Catholicism has been particularly important; Europe in the middle ages; modern Poland, France, Ireland and Austria; Latin America and the immigrant experience in America. Finally, it is evident in the concern of many members of the department with what the colloquy refers to as "human solidarity," matters of political participation, and of social and political justice as they are mediated by national, cultural, racial and gender identities.

Notre Dame OpenCourseware (OCW) offers free online educational resources for courses in the Department of Africana Studies. Africana Studies exposes students to historical and contemporary issues that offer a deeper understanding of the cultural diversity inherent in Afrodiasporan and African life. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the faculty prepare students to interact and function in a diverse society.
Building on the legacy of the African and African American Studies Program, the Department of Africana Studies provides a disciplined and rigorous intellectual environment to study the histories, literatures, political systems, arts, economies, cultures, and religions of the African Diaspora and Africa. These inquiries incorporate the expertise of faculty members from a variety of fields. Their work furthers department-sponsored initiatives that speak to the moral, ethical, and religious concerns at the heart of Notre Dame's Catholic character and mission.
